The breeds in this group all have a strong instinct to herd. Used to herd livestock in various localities and climates, over the centuries natural and human selection have produced active and intelligent dogs with protective coats. Most of the breeds listed in this category are recognized by the FCI as Group I Herders and/or by the AKC as belonging to the Herding Group. There are also some without official recognition save that of the humans they serve.
